Just a 47-year-old mom of 2 in Northern California. My kids are Monkey Monkey(MM) and Drama Llama (DL). I am married to Monkey Hubby (MH).

We were a one-income family for 13 years. In late 2015 my spouse returned to work (minimum wage/part-time/seasonal). Something recent on his resume just buys us more options for the long run. The main benefit of this job is that he just works while the kids are in school. As always, we are saving 100% of his income.

We saved a lot while we were very young and also moved to a lower cost-of-living area, to make life much simpler. We still live in California though (in one of the most expensive regions of the U.S.). *Simple* and *inexpensive* is relative.

Likewise, we have never had debt aside from our mortgage.** My blog is a testament to how much simpler life is without debt; how we have that much more money to both save and enjoy!

**Caveat: I have no problem whatsoever with credit cards paid off monthly, or low-risk credit arbitrage (for example, 0%-interest debt while earning 5% on FDIC-insured cash). These are the kinds of debt we have had. Just not interested in high-interest debt, using debt to buy beyond means, and not interested in the hassle that comes with loans and payments. With age and means, the latter (hassle) is our biggest debt avoidance motivation.

Current big picture goal:

[ ]$1 Mil in retirement accounts by age 52.

Stretch Goal: Achieve by age 50

Have decided to pretty much stay the course. Keep saving 20%+ to retirement. This means taking 401K match & maxing out IRAs.

NOTE: WE HAVE NEVER CONTRIBUTED LESS THAN 10% TO RETIREMENT. NO EXCEPTIONS.

If we can't achieve at least 10%, then something else has to give. I share because it's infinitely easier to save for retirement if you start early. Let the investments do the hard work for you.

Ongoing goal is to *never borrow money again.*

Took on a $230k mortgage in 2001 and have not added to that.

Net Worth: Increase net worth by $600,000 in the next 10 years. This is my "financial independence" goal.

This is in line with prior goal, saving 100% of our expenses every year.

{Our expenses are far more consistent than our income. Also, helps to prevent "living up to income."}

Target RedCard - Free Shipping

Did you hear?

Target is now offering free shipping (no minimum purchase) to RedCard holders.

I heard about 3 ads on the radio about it on my 10 minute commute. I was like, "Since when???" I looked up when I got to work - it was just announced today. Phew. I thought I was slacking on knowing all my credit card rewards and benefits. Wink

Interestingly, the RedCard has worked out really well for us. Target is probably one of my favorite stores for retail therapy. BUT, we have had the RedCard for one year and I have barely been in the store. We do spend about $100/month, on average, on groceries there. & cat litter, laundry detergent - that kind of stuff that they seem to have in bulk and on sale often. Groceries - we generally stock up on nuts, granola bars, generic cereals, and stuff like that.

Free online shipping??? Boy, that's trouble! I will have to resist! Big Grin I do most my shopping online - free shipping is a bit of a weakness. I think shipping charges is generally what reins me in pretty well.

Does any techie know why *everyone* is revamping their websites in the next 1-2 weeks???? I've got notices from several credit card companies, mortgage company, etc. that site will be down for a couple of days over the weekend. (Last weekend, next weekend, some in October. MOST will be down this upcoming weekend).

THEN, PG&E sent me a similar notice, but they will have lots of new features. I am wondering if this means I can finally pay this bill by credit card! That will be the first thing I check when it comes back online.

My CU will also be doing a revamp of some sort. We have had online scanning of deposits for a while, but they just got a smart phone app worked out. That will be SWEET if we ever get smart phones. (We both want them and know we will eventually, but the cost is just ridiculous at the moment - waiting it out for more reasonable costs - as we tend to do with these things). So yeah, CU website will be down too, this weekend.

Weird... I've been getting those bank notices too. I hadn't put 2 and 2 together and realized how many though. Wonder why. That or I'm not able to access sites lately - too many of them down for maintenance too often.

I suppose a lot of them seem to be related to mobile apps. I was just clearing junk e-mail from the weekend and read some of the notices a little closer.
